Haverhill, Massachusetts is leading the way in environmental sustainability, with significant developments that underscore its commitment to becoming a green city.

The state Department of Energy Resources recognized Haverhill as a "Green Community", enabling it to receive two major Green Communities grants. The initial award of $315,000 in 2019 targets a reduction in the city’s energy use and spending by 20% over five years. The most recent grant, amounting to $192,000, is being allocated for energy-saving weatherization improvements at various city facilities and to acquire electric vehicles for City Hall inspectors.

These projects form part of a more extensive green initiative that includes electric vehicle charging stations at City Hall, the expansion of the Fiorentini Bradford Rail Trail, and a robust tree-planting program.

Haverhill's commitment to green energy is further exemplified through its solar initiatives. A large solar farm was established in 2011, and plans for another one are underway. The current solar farm, spanning 5 acres with 3,565 panels, generates enough electricity to power 200 homes, significantly reducing emissions. Additionally, a rooftop solar array of 1,166 panels installed on the Leewood Building in the Newark Street industrial park caters to up to 95% of the electrical needs of Swix Sport USA, the building’s primary tenant.

The proposed solar farm is planned for a 16-acre section of a 100-acre agricultural plot. Although the city does not directly benefit from the electricity generated, it profits from property and business taxes related to these solar farms.

As a part of the latest Green Communities grant, funds have been allocated to purchase three electric vehicles for city inspectors. The city has also installed electric vehicle charging stations at City Hall. Current data shows that Haverhill boasts 17 public charging station ports within a 15km radius, all of which are Level 2 charging ports, with 11% offering free charges.

Haverhill's initiatives are part of a larger statewide effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Over half of the communities included in the latest round of grants included at least one vehicular project, such as installing charging stations or replacing gas-powered vehicles with hybrids or electric vehicles. These projects are expected to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 231 tons, leading to a lifetime reduction of 1,158 tons. This ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability cements Haverhill's position as a pioneering green city.
