Home energy upgrades can help you save money and save the planet. If you live in Massachusetts, you can get rebates on all your heating and cooling updates through Mass Save. Here’s some updates on the program that you’ll need to know.
Mass Save Rebate 2024 has some changes this year
1. You’re now required to remove or disable your current heating system
Effective January 1, 2024, your home’s current fossil fuel heating system will need to be removed or completely disconnected to qualify for the whole-home heat pump rebates.
This is the biggest update compared to 2023, which allowed homeowners to keep their previous heating system as long as they only used it while their heat pumps were being worked on.
There are a few different ways you can go about disabling your pre-existing system, including: removing the system all together, disconnecting it from its power source, removing its thermostat from both the system board and walls, or disconnecting and capping its fuel line.
2. Rebates for fossil fuel equipment will be phased out on August 31, 2024
This means you’ll need to install your new fossil fuel equipment by August 31, 2024 and submit your rebate application postmarked by September 30, 2024. There’s also a limit of 1 boiler and 2 furnaces.
3. Rebates for fossil fuel equipment have also been reduced
On top of the August 31, 2024 installation deadline, Mass Save has reduced many of the rebate amounts for fossil fuel boilers, furnaces, and water heaters in 2024. Luckily the rebate amounts for heat pumps are the same this year, so if you’ve been thinking about making the switch, now is as good a time as ever.
4. 2024 Mass Save HEAT Loan
The Mass Save HEAT loan is a zero-interest, 7-year loan of up to $50,000 to help get your whole-home heat pump installed.
Mass Save has made it really easy to learn both the amount of money you can save and the amount of CO2 emissions you can avoid by switching to a new heating system. Discover your savings now with the Mass Save Heating Comparison Calculator

Which home energy upgrades are eligible for Mass Save rebates?
There are four different types of energy-efficient appliances that are eligible for savings.
1. Heat pumps
Heat pumps come with the largest incentives of up to $25,000. Beyond that, they can offer you lower energy bills over time and a lifespan of up to 20 years.
2. Boilers and furnaces
Upgrading to an energy-efficient boiler or furnace can get you up to $7,300 in rebates. Plus, these modern heaters come with advanced controls that help manage temperatures and keep your energy bill down.
3. Water heaters
By replacing your current system with a split-system heat pump water heater, you can unlock a rebate of $1,500. It uses a heat pump to generate hot water and is more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than a traditional water heater.
4. Thermostats
You can get rebates on programmable and smart thermostats as well as integrated control thermostats. With rebates ranging from $25 to $500, all three options can help you lower your energy bill by ensuring your HVAC system only works as hard as you need it to.
